How JSON Formatter works

Paste any JSON document into the input panel and choose one of three modes. Format pretty-prints the JSON with the indentation you choose, two spaces, four spaces, or a tab, making nested structures readable at a glance. Minify removes every space and newline so the result fits on a single line and typically reduces payload size by 30–50%. Validate checks the document for syntax errors without producing any output, useful when you only need a yes-or-no answer. Two optional toggles further refine the output: Sort keys orders object keys alphabetically, essential for stable diffs in code review, and Trailing commas appends a comma after the last item in arrays and objects (handy when writing JSON5 or VS Code config files).

JSON Formatter use cases

  • Comparing two API responses side by side after formatting both with the same indent and sort options
  • Embedding a config blob into a single line for a shell variable, environment file, or HTML data attribute
  • Spot-checking a webhook payload before saving it as a test fixture
  • Producing a deterministic representation of a JSON document for hashing, signing, or diffing

JSON Formatter example

Input:

{"user":"ada","scopes":["read","write","admin"],"active":true,"meta":{"team":"platform","seats":12}}

Output (Format · Sort keys · 2-space indent):

{
  "active": true,
  "meta": {
    "seats": 12,
    "team": "platform"
  },
  "scopes": [
    "read",
    "write",
    "admin"
  ],
  "user": "ada"
}

Frequently asked

What does JSON Formatter do?

It pretty-prints, minifies, and validates JSON documents. Paste any JSON in, choose Format / Minify / Validate, and the result appears next to it, with optional sorting of object keys and trailing-comma output.

Can I sort object keys alphabetically?

Yes. Toggle Sort keys in the toolbar and Format mode will recursively reorder every object's keys. The result is byte-stable for the same input, useful for diffing two JSON documents in code review.

Does it report syntax errors with the line number?

Yes. When the parser fails, JSON Formatter shows the underlying error message alongside the position where parsing stopped, so you can jump to the exact byte that broke the document.

What's the file size limit?

There is no fixed cap. Documents up to ~50 MB format comfortably on a desktop; mobile devices may run out of memory sooner. If a file is too large, switch to a streaming parser instead.

Does it accept JSON5 or comments?

No. The parser is strict JSON, single quotes, trailing commas, and // or /* */ comments are rejected. Convert the input to standard JSON first, or enable Trailing commas in the toolbar to emit JSON5-compatible output.

Is my data private?

Yes. Your JSON is processed locally on your device, nothing is uploaded, sent to a third party, or stored on a server. ZipKit doesn't track usage or require an account, so confidential payloads are safe to paste in.

Is JSON Formatter free? Do I need to sign up?

It's free, with no account, no signup, and no usage limit. Every tool on ZipKit (1,255+ of them) works the same way, open the page and start using it.

How does this compare to JSON Minifier / Prettifier?

JSON Minifier is a simpler companion tool focused on the format ↔ minify round-trip. JSON Formatter adds Validate-only mode, key sorting, trailing-comma output, and detailed parse-error messages, pick it when you need the extra options.
